About

Boutique Audio Design is the brainchild of Fred Crane and Tess Wonson. Fred and Tess joined forces at Axpona (an acronym for Audio Expo North America) in 2018. The show was such a success that they decided to get married and start a family on the drive back from Chicago. All to say, be careful with whom you listen to one of our systems; they are life-creating, paradaigm morphing excursions into a new reality…and isn’t that what the best of music should gives us. Tess is deeply rooted in theater and dance having done both professionally. Her love of art led her to work closely with some of the finest artists on the east coast, and seeing a niche to be filled, she became adept in the world of business to further their endeavors.

Fred has spent as much time in front of live music as in front of audio systems, (an imperative if you want to curate true experiences with electronics). Having grown up with professional musicians (both parents and his sister), Fred developed an obsession for getting as close to the live performance as possible, cobbling together systems from the studios that provided after-school employment during his teen years. Other professions insued, (each of which informs this venture) until 13 years ago when Fred decided to allow his obsession to become his work. It has accounted for hundreds of thousands of miles of travel to meet with engineers and manufacturers of varying disciplines and approaches. This followed by further research and real world experimentation, guided by continual listening and a love of design.. Boutique Audio Design distills what we have found to be life-affirming cutting edge solutions that would not be out of place in the most discerningly designed homes. The Epitome, our expression of the absolute finest reproduced music in any home, is a joint venture with Fazioli Pianoforti and Timothy Oulton. Our showroom on the harbor in Gloucester, MA is open by appointment. We look forward to sharing what is possible, (you’ve heard nothing like it) that it may enrich your lives as it has our own.
